York is one of the best cities in the country for a day trip because almost everything is within walking distance. The Shambles and the lanes around it are the medieval heart of the city, York Minster is a few minutes away, and you can walk long stretches of the city walls for a view over the rooftops. Add the museums, the independent shops and a long list of cafés, tearooms and restaurants and most passengers find the day goes quickly.

Driving into York means the ring road, the park-and-ride sites and city-centre parking charges — and then the walk in anyway. On a coach day trip you join at your own local pickup point, someone else drives, and you are collected from the same place at the end of the day with your bags in the luggage hold.
