View tripHoly Island is reached by a causeway that floods twice a day, which is exactly why it is easier by coach — the timings are worked around the safe crossing times so you are not watching the tide tables yourself. On the island there is the priory ruin, Lindisfarne Castle on its crag, the harbour with its upturned-boat sheds, and a small village of shops and tea rooms.
Seahouses is a working harbour village and the traditional stop for fish and chips on the Northumberland coast, with a sandy beach, an ice cream shop or two and boats running out towards the Farne Islands in season. It is an easy place to spend a couple of hours whatever the weather does.
The coast is exposed, so bring a coat and shoes you can walk on sand and cobbles in. Holy Island in particular involves a fair bit of walking from the coach to the priory and castle. The coach returns you to the same local stop the same evening, so it is a genuine day out with no overnight stay.
