Caledonia Park, Gretna

Caledonia Park is an outlet shopping village just over the Scottish border, with brand outlets grouped around an open-air layout plus cafés and food outlets on site. It is the sort of place people visit twice a year — once before Christmas and once in the sales — and it works far better without the two-hour drive at each end.

Carlisle

Carlisle gives you a city centre instead of an outlet: a castle, a cathedral, a covered market and the usual high street shops within walking distance of each other. On this trip you can choose one or split the day between both, which suits couples and groups who do not all want the same thing.

The cross-country run

The route west follows the A69 across Northumberland and Cumbria, one of the more scenic trunk roads in England, past Hadrian's Wall country and the North Pennines. Because we start from local pickups in Northumberland and Newcastle, there is no early drive to a departure point — you join near home and the driver does the rest.
