What you can do with a day in Edinburgh

The city centre is compact and walkable from the usual coach drop-off areas. The Royal Mile runs downhill from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood, with the National Museum of Scotland, St Giles' Cathedral and the closes and courtyards of the Old Town on the way. Princes Street and George Street cover the shopping, and Princes Street Gardens give you somewhere to sit with a view of the castle rock. Most passengers pick one paid attraction and leave the rest of the day for wandering, coffee and a late lunch.

Edinburgh by coach rather than by car or train

Driving into Edinburgh means the bypass, the bus lanes and city-centre parking charges; the train means getting to and from a station at both ends. On a coach day trip you join at your own local pickup point, someone else does the driving, and you get dropped near the centre and collected from the same place at the end of the day. Seats are reserved to your name, so you know where you are sitting both ways.

When to go

Edinburgh works all year, but the two peaks are August, when the Fringe takes over the city's streets and venues, and late November to December, when the Christmas Markets fill Princes Street Gardens and East Princes Street. Edinburgh Zoo is a good choice outside those peaks and in the school holidays. Dates are released as they are confirmed, and each trip page shows the exact departures with seats still available.
