What Beamish is like
Beamish is a working open-air museum spread over a large site in County Durham, where costumed staff run a 1900s town, a colliery village, a farm and a Georgian landscape. Vintage trams and buses carry you between the areas, which matters on a big site — you can ride rather than walk the whole way. Expect the dentist and sweet shop on the town street, the pit cottages and the school, and plenty of places to stop for tea.
Beamish at Christmas
Beamish runs seasonal Christmas events, and we put on separate departures for them: a daytime trip and an evening trip, each with its own dates. The evenings are the atmospheric option, with the town lit up after dark. These dates sell first, so they are worth booking early.
Why go by coach
Beamish is a full day and a lot of walking, so arriving without a drive at either end helps. You join at your usual local pickup, the driver checks you off the passenger list, and the coach waits to bring you home the same evening. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a coat — most of the day is outdoors.
